At one time, Algeria and Hungary had a very close relationship, however that slackened over time; to be recently re-established with spectacular success. Trade has been multiplied and direct flights between the two capital cities have been introduced. We asked Abdelkader Dehendi, Algerian ambassador to Budapest, about the relationship today between the two countries.

Let us begin with a recent event: the visit by Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó to Algiers. How would you evaluate the meeting?
– It was a very important milestone in our bilateral relations and showed that the extremely good relationship that existed between our two countries in the 1970s and 1980s can be restored. A number of specific agreements were concluded. The parties agreed to launch a complex co-operation programme for the establishment of a dairy farming site with fifteen thousand cows and the construction of the required infrastructure for the manufacturing of processed dairy products; in order to address the milk supply problems in Algeria. The Algerian government is also expecting bids from Hungarian construction companies for the reconstruction of the national stadium. In addition, a Hungarian trading house will soon be opened in Algiers to promote the success of small and medium-sized enterprises. The Algerian prime minister is scheduled to visit Hungary in H1 of 2017 and, during Mr. Szijjártó’s visit, some educational, cultural, sport and youth agreements were finalised and those are to be signed in Budapest. Péter Szijjártó wished to emphasise that Hungary is providing scholarship places for 100 more Algerian students to join the 87 already studying in Hungarian higher education on scholarships.
