The American presidential elections may not have been followed as anxiously elsewhere in the world; and perhaps nowhere else had Donald Trump’s election such an obviously positive response as in Sevnica. The people of the small Slovenian town lit bonfires and celebrated the new president with a street party, despite the cold of that 9th November evening. The party was in fact dedicated to the presidential couple, as Sevnica is the birthplace of Mrs. Melania Trump; that is Melanija Knauss. As well as being a biographical curiosity, that fact is important as there has never been a president so close to central Europe through his family ties. Although the region has provided US foreign secretaries, from Kissinger to Albright, all presidential families, until now, have had western European roots. Even if nothing else suggested that Donald Trump would have a better understanding of eastern Europe than any previous president, that would give cause for hope.
